Feel Understood, Grow Stronger

Forward Counseling

I specialize in helping adults navigate the complex aftermath of being raised in emotionally immature family systems. My approach integrates deep knowledge of complex family systems and identity development with EMDR therapy to help clients move past 'just talking' about their childhood and into active healing. I help cycle-breakers trade chronic guilt and people-pleasing for firm boundaries and a grounded sense of self."

People generally don't seek therapy because life is going smoothly. Working together we can identify and highlight your strengths to help you move through the world with less stress and struggle. Building resilience will assist you in managing shame, doubt, guilt, and trauma from your past and help you move forward. Our sessions will generally feel like a conversation with a trusted friend as we navigate stressors and old narratives that continue to affect your life.

I've been in practice now for over 10 years and have experience working with individuals who struggle with anxiety, depression, overthinking/intellectualizing, trauma, boundary setting, people pleasing, problematic substance use, disentangling from diet culture, reproductive health (Infertility, IVF, TFMR, PCOS, chronic pelvic pain), among many other issues. I am also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). It isn't just for "Big T" trauma. It helps "reprocess" the "small t" traumas—like the repeated feeling of being unseen or dismissed. We use EMDR to target the core negative beliefs you formed as a child, such as "I am not enough" or "My needs don't matter."

I help the 'parentified' child find their way back to themselves. How do you know if this is you? You may experience this as feeling like you had to "parent" your parents, chronic guilt for having your own needs, and a tendency toward people-pleasing. You might struggle with setting boundaries or feel a deep sense of loneliness even when with family. By combining EMDR for trauma reprocessing with a deep understanding of complex family dynamics, I provide a roadmap for clients who feel stuck in old roles. Whether you are dealing with enmeshment, emotional neglect, or the 'scapegoat' dynamic, we work to rewire the survival patterns that no longer serve you.

I am trained in psychodynamic therapy and integrate learnings from other modalities such as ACT, MBSR, Gestalt, among others. I’m an unabashed therapy nerd, regularly reading and studying about different principles and ideas in the field. I do not believe there is a single right therapeutic modality in favor of using an eclectic mix of approaches to adapt to clients’ needs. I work to continually learn and grow as a clinician to support cultural humility, diversity, inclusivity and accountability within my practice.

I have previously practiced in community mental health settings providing group and individual therapy to people with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health issues, assessing and diagnosing substance use disorders in a medication assisted treatment program, providing care advocacy at an insurance company, and working in a group practice. Most recently I was the Director of Operations managing a large group practice with 80+ clinicians providing support and training to developing clinicians. I left that role to allow more time to focus on my clinical interests and passions and developed Forward Counseling LLC.

I am aligned with Health at Every Size (HAES) principles, am LGBTQIA2S+ affirming/celebrating, and work to maintain a therapeutic space where individuals feel seen, heard, valued and respected.
